What is a pediatric neuropsychologist?

A pediatric neuropsychologist is a licensed psychologist with special expertise in how learning and behavior are associated with the development of brain structures and functions. The pediatric neuropsychologist has received years of additional training in pediatric brain development, including two years of post-doctoral specialty training.

What is a pediatric neuropsychological evaluation?

  • Gathering of clinical history, parent and teacher observations, academic and medical records
  • Interviews with students and parents
  • Clinical observations throughout the evaluation process with your child by our experts
  • Administration of standardized tests that measure brain functions. Tests are selected based on each student’s presenting concerns, age, abilities and cultural considerations
What type of skills are evaluated in a Neuropsychological Evaluation?

Each evaluation is individualized based on your child’s needs but may include assessment of the following:

  • General intelligence (IQ)
  • Academic skills including phonological awareness, phonemic decoding, encoding/spelling, reading fluency, comprehension, vocabulary, math computation, math application, and math fluency
  • Attention and executive functioning
  • Memory
  • Processing speed
  • Language and communication skills
  • Visual-spatial and visual perceptual skills
  • Fine motor and visual-motor skills
  • Social, emotional, and behavioral functioning
How is a diagnosis reached?

All information gathered (history, feedback from others, testing, clinical observations) are integrated with known research and clinical expertise to develop a deeper understanding of your child’s brain-related strengths and weaknesses as well as diagnostic impressions. All of this is translated into a detailed, individualized road map to foster each student’s success and confidence!
